In the current steel pipe market, seamless steel pipe is another very popular type of steel products in a wide range of applications besides welded steel pipe that we have mentioned much more in the previous articles. As a rule, seamless steel pipe manufacturing starts with a solid, round steel billet. This billet is then heated to great temperatures and stretched and pulled over a form until it takes the shape of a hollow tube. In practical applications, one distinctive feature of seamless steel pipes is their increased ability to withstand pressure in some structure frame buildings. Furthermore, because seamless steel pipe has not been welded, it doesn’t have that seam, making it equally strong around the entire circumference of other types of steel pipe in the market. It is also much easier to determine pressure calculations without being required to take weld quality into consideration.
In the current steel pipe market, people will find that seamless steel pipe price is relatively higher than welded steel pipe price. Of course, there are many factors for steel pipe manufacturers to give their steel pipe prices. Here we would like to briefly talk about it from two aspects. For the one thing, seamless steel pipe is a continuous extrusion of the alloy, meaning that it will have a round cross section that you can count on, which is helpful when you’re installing pipes or adding fittings. For the other thing, this type of pipe has greater strength under loading. Pipe failures and leaks in welded pipes usually occur at the welded seam. But because seamless pipe doesn’t have that seam, it isn’t subject to those failures.
As it is widely acknowledged, the main perceived advantage of seamless pipes is that they don’t have a weld seam. Traditionally, the seam of welded pipes has been viewed as a weak spot, vulnerable to failure and corrosion. For many years, this fear was probably justified. In the recent years, steel pipe manufacturers in China have made great improvements in the manufacturing process for welded steel pipes and other welded pipes have boosted the strength and performance of the weld seam to levels indistinguishable from that of the rest of the pipe. On the other hand, Welded steel pipes are typically more cost effective than their seamless equivalents. Welded pipes are usually more readily available than seamless pipes. The longer lead time required for seamless pipes can not only make timing problematic, but it also allows more time for the price of the materials to fluctuate. The wall thickness of welded pipes is generally more consistent than that of seamless pipes. In construction field, welded steel pipe are the most popular type of structural steel pipes in some large projects around.
